Things you didnt know about Lanzarote

Feb, 28 || No Comments |

Lanzarote is well known for sun, sea, sand and most importantly sangria! Part of the Canary Islands, it enjoys almost year round sunshine and is budget friendly both to reach, and to eat and drink there when you arrive, making it popular with British holiday makers. But there’s more to this beautiful island than meets the eye.

Out of this world

They say that the famous Timanfaya Park in Lanzarote looks like the surface of the moon. The story goes that astronauts looked at pictures of the park to get an idea of what the surface of the moon would look like.

Just like the movies

Lanzarote’s stunning landscape has been the chosen backdrop for some of the most well-known movies of our time like Doctor Who and Moby Dick. It was also where the Stone Roses filmed the video for their smash hit ‘I wanna be adored.’

The old timer

Lanzarote is the oldest of the Canary Islands, and has been in existence for over 180 million years (compared with the youngest which has only been around for 75, 000!).

An explosive history

Lanzarote was hit by a series of explosions in the early 1700s forcing most of the people who lived there off the island. Eleven (that’s a quarter) of their then settlements were buried in molten lava and even though over 250 years has passed there is still a lack of vegetation on the quarter of the island that was most badly affected. Lanzarote is also home to ‘The Tunnel of Atlantis’, the largest under water volcanic tunnel in the world.

Wine Making

The La Geria region of Lanzarote is famous for a special type of wine, only produced there. The vines here have been specially standardised to grow in high winds. Visitors to the region will have the opportunity to sample the wine.

Before you book your Lanzarote flights, be sure to consider the time of year. There is so much to see and it can get chilly in the evenings. If you want to explore the more off track areas, be sure to pack hiking boots and lightweight jacket.
